4 New Year’s Resolutions for Your Law Firm Website

The new year is an excellent time to set resolutions designed to help achieve your practice growth and professional goals as well. In the digital age, one of the most important parts of your practice-growth strategy is your law firm’s website. Keep reading this post for four resolutions that can help breathe new life into your law firm’s website as you start working toward your 2024 goals.

1. Update Your Website Content

The law changes, and the legal landscape evolves. In order to get the most from your law firm website, you want to ensure that you are always sharing the most up-to-date information. Outdated info undermines your professional credibility and your search engine optimization (SEO) strategy.

Start by reviewing your website content to identify any changes in the law or other inaccuracies. Then, update your content accordingly. You should also check for broken links, add any new and exciting case results or reviews, and showcase recent awards or honors you have earned in your practice. Double-check your contact information, too, especially if you have made changes within the past year.

You can also use AI tools, such as Justia’s legally focused Justia AI Writer or ChatGPT or Bard, to help you write legal content. You should always check the output of these AI tools to make sure they are truthful, and this especially goes if you are using generic AI tools such as ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, or Bard. While AI writing tools do require editorial checking of the output for legal accuracy, they can be extremely helpful in providing suggestions for an already existing webpage, writing drafts of new paragraphs, or even full webpages.

2. Update Your Lawyer and Law Firm Directory Profiles

First, you should check and update the most important law firm profile, your Google Business Profile. Make sure all of the information is correct, and add any new information for fields that Google may have added to the profile since you last checked. Add new office and team photos and short videos to your profile. And make any other updates or posts as desired.

Second, if you have made any changes to your law firm’s contact information (especially the NAP data, the law firm name, address, and phone number), make sure to update all references to your law firm and lawyers in lawyer directories and business directories. If needed, you can use a service such as Yext, WhiteSpark, or Bright Local to do a mass update of this core NAP data.

Even if you have not changed your law firm contact information, you should check these directories to make sure that no errors were introduced to their profile of your law firm and lawyers. Having your NAP information consistent will help you not just with users of these directories but also reinforce the information and help your Google Business Profile rank higher.

You also will want to add new lawyers and update information for all your law firm’s lawyer profiles on lawyer directories, such as the Justia Lawyer Directory, Avvo, FindLaw, Lawyers.com / Martindale.com, and LawLink.

3. Invest in New Photos for Your Website and Directories

You never get a second chance to make a first impression! The visual appeal of your law firm website can play a key role in how potential clients perceive your practice, and images also help create more authentic connections with visitors.

Consider updated headshots for your team in the new year. If you get a new headshot, also update your lawyer directory and social media profiles with the same photo, especially the Justia Lawyer Directory, Avvo, LinkedIn, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter).

You may also want to update the photos on your website. Review the other elements of your website homepage and ensure the visuals align with your brand and the message you want to communicate to potential clients.

If you use third-party tools, such as Semrush, AHREFS, or Moz, review their analysis of your website (and your competitors) to find areas for improvement.

Examining your website traffic and search positions will help you make informed decisions about updating or adding new content and increase the credibility and traffic of your website.
