Bar Exam Dates Modified, Some States Go Online Due to COVID-19

Many states have either postponed the July 2020 bar exam, implemented social distancing rules for tests that will occur as scheduled in July, made plans to conduct the test online, or expanded limited practice rules for recent law school graduates due to COVID-19 concerns.

In light of the evolving challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic, attorney licensing jurisdictions across the country have been reviewing and modifying their original plans to administer the bar exam in July 2020. States have landed on a variety of approaches, including postponing the exam until September or October, proceeding with the July exam as scheduled but requiring social distancing and other precautionary measures, and/or offering the exam in July as well as the fall. A small number of jurisdictions, including California and Indiana, have announced their intentions to administer the bar exam online, which in some cases will also involve a postponed exam date.

Several states have also announced or expanded opportunities for recent law school graduates to participate in limited practice arrangements if they are supervised by a licensed attorney while bar exam dates and results are pending.
