The last year has been a busy one for Justia! Check out our 2023 year in review for a look at what has been going on with the Justia team and our highlights over the past year.

As 2023 comes to a close, we are looking back at all that Justia has accomplished this year! Guided by our mission to make the law free and accessible for all, our team has concentrated on our free law projects while also working on our state-of-the-art marketing solutions to help lawyers achieve their goals.

Our dedicated team spent countless hours working to further our goals this year, from launching new features for our Justia Marketing Solutions to expanding the Justia Legal Portal and more! Keep reading this post to look at our team’s 2023 highlights.

Increased Access to the Law for All

The heart of Justia is our mission to make the law free and accessible for all. The law belongs to all of us, and we sincerely believe people should have access to the legal information shaping the world around them. This year, we continued to be guided by our mission to bring access to the law to new heights!

A Glance at the Numbers

Justia shared lots of free information online this year! The numbers help illustrate just how many times our team was able to connect people with the law.

The highlighted numbers only tell part of the story of how much free law Justia shared this year. Taking a deeper dive into the details paints a clearer picture of what we were able to accomplish.

Justia Legal Dictionary

The average American does not use legal jargon in everyday life. Helping people understand these terms is key to empowering the public with greater knowledge about the law and legal issues. This year, we launched the Justia Legal Dictionary so visitors to the Justia website could more easily understand this language.

50-State Surveys for Consumers

While states have enacted parallel laws in some areas, their laws diverge greatly in others. This can lead to different outcomes for people in similar situations. This year, we compiled several new 50-state surveys to help people better understand their rights. These surveys cover common issues and areas of the law, such as marriage licenses, compulsory education, emancipation of minors, minimum wage laws, dog bite laws, dram shop laws, drug possession laws, criminal statutes of limitations, consumer protection laws, fair debt collection laws, income tax laws, civil statutes of limitations, and more!

Information on Current Legal Issues

Members of the Justia Team shared breaking legal news and updates on current issues via the Justia Legal News blog throughout the year.

Access to Cases, Codes, and the Law

People continued to use Justia to access key provisions of the law throughout the year. Terry v. Ohio was the most popular U.S. Supreme Court case on our site this year with over 135,000 views. It was followed by other landmark cases that have shaped the U.S. legal system, including Roe v. Wade, Graham v. Connor, Marbury v. Madison, and Tennessee v. Garner.

Visitors to the Justia Portal were also particularly interested in various areas of the law. The U.S. Code was popular with consumers. The Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution was the most viewed federal constitutional provision this year.

We also continued to expand access to the law using new mediums, with the launch of our Justia Legal Guides Videos.

Helping the Next Generation of Lawyers

In 2022, Justia was recognized with a LegalTech Breakthrough Award as the Legal Education Innovation of the year for its work with the Justia U.S. Law Schools Center. Justia continued to focus on helping the next generation of lawyers in 2023.

Our popular case case law outlines remained a hit, with Sports Law, Civil Procedure, Contracts, Criminal Procedure, Entertainment Law, Criminal Law, Business Organizations, Constitutional Law, Family Law, and Trusts and Estates being the most visited outlines for students and other legal enthusiasts over the past year.

Likewise, future lawyers took advantage of Justia’s resources while selecting an educational institution. The John F. Kennedy University School of Law, David A. Clarke School of Law, George Washington University Law School, Washington College of Law, and Georgetown University Law Center were the most frequently viewed institutions in the Justia U.S. Law Schools Center this year.

Expanding Access to the Law Abroad

Our team also continued to help increase access to the law abroad with the addition of new information to the Justia Mexico Portal and our other Latin American law portals.

Connecting Lawyers and the Public

The Justia Lawyer Directory

Throughout the year, Justia helped people and lawyers better connect with one another. Nearly 550,000 individual lawyers across the nation were viewed in the Justia Lawyer Directory this year – that is more than one lawyer viewed every minute in 2023!

Similarly, potential clients initiated more than 1.6 million phone calls to lawyers from the Justia Lawyer Directory. That is lots of consumers reaching out to lawyers – more than three calls initiated for every minute this year – and that doesn’t count emails and contact forms sent via our directory!

Justia Ask A Lawyer

Consumers also frequently turned to Justia Ask A Lawyer for answers to their basic legal questions throughout the year. Attorneys across the nation answered the call to participate in this forum. So many lawyers participated that over 20,000 consumers received answers to their questions from a licensed, U.S. attorney.

Questions were most frequently received in 2023 from users in California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Georgia. These questions were most frequently about issues in the following practice areas: Criminal Law, Family Law, Landlord-Tenant Law, Real Estate Law, and Employment Law.

Many users this year also frequently searched the existing questions and answers in our database rather than submitting new questions when needing information. Below are some of the most commonly searched keywords and phrases over the past year:

Many lawyers across the nation answered the call to participate in Justia Ask A Lawyer! These 10 lawyers, however, were some of the most active attorneys on the platform this year: James L. Arrasmith, T. Augustus Claus, John Michael Frick, Tim Akpinar, Anthony M. Avery, Timothy Denison, Joel Gary Selik, Terrence H. Thorgaard, Maurice Mandel II, and Robert Kane.

Helping Lawyers Achieve Their Goals

Throughout the year, we continued to offer our products designed to help lawyers reach their full potential.

Justia Connect

In 2021, Justia launched the Justia Connect membership program for lawyers with Justia Connect Pro following in 2022. In 2023, our membership continued to grow with almost 5,000 new members joining.

We hosted over 20 Justia Webinars for our members throughout the year with over 15 of those webinars being eligible for CLE credit. Justia’s efforts at educating lawyers through the Justia CLE & Webinars platform were so successful that they earned us another LegalTech Breakthrough Award as the 2023 Legal Education Innovation of the Year.

Justia Connect members also had the opportunity to get updates from the Justia Onward Legal Marketing and Technology Blog, which published over 75 new articles this year. Members also enjoyed opportunities to save with Justia Deals.

Lawyers with the upgraded Justia Connect Pro Membership also enjoyed an enhanced Justia Lawyer Directory profile, a $200 Justia Credit, the ability to feature reviews on their Justia Profile, and more!

Justia Marketing Solutions

This year, we continued to improve the Justia Elevate platform with new tools and features, such as the Justia AI Writer. With Justia AI Writer, lawyers can draft law firm website content in a fraction of the time! The information available in the Justia Elevate Knowledge Base for clients continued to expand as well.

Throughout the year, Justia continued to also offer our other services, including Justia Premium Placements for up to 280x more visibility on average in the Justia Lawyer Directory than our free profiles. Paid search engine marketing continued to be available for lawyers of all budgets with our Justia Amplify PPC management solutions.

Building Team Justia

Our dedicated team is the heart of Justia. Over 100 employees diligently work each day to ensure that all people have greater access to the law and that our clients can enjoy the best digital legal marketing solutions available on the market.

As our team continues to grow in various locations, we prioritized team-building through a number of virtual events. We enjoyed lots of love and laughter in various events this year, including Justia’s Got Talent, the annual Justia Ghoulie Awards, virtual escape rooms, friendly competitions, and more!
